On Monday, car manufacturing company Volkswagen published an announcement saying that they will be changing their name to “Voltswagen of America”
What seemed to be an April fool’s day prank however turned out to be an announcement that was published accidentally since the press release was dated April 29.
According to an employee that asked not to be named, the company is said to have contemplated the name change in an attempt to highlight its Electric Vehicle program.
The senior employee at Volkswagen America said that the name change was genuine, only that the announcement was published ahead of the scheduled time.
CNBC notes that the release was incomplete, and had notes indicating that further photographs and quotes were to be added before publication. The notes further explained how Voltswagen would coexist with the VW badge before the name change kicked in. The post was since taken down from their press site.
Even though the media assumed that this was a botched April Fool’s day prank, the revelations from an insider suggest otherwise; Voltswagen it is!
At this point, we wouldn’t be surprised to see VW at dealer’s stores, but under a new name.
