Apple Is Finally Getting Serious About Foldable Phones – iOS 27 Will Feature Tools for Its Upcoming Flexible iPhone, but You’ll Need Deep Pockets
Foldable smartphones are no longer groundbreaking they’ve become just another segment of the mobile market. Samsung is already on its seventh generation of foldables, Huawei is actively selling both book-style and flip models in China, and even Motorola has entered the scene. As always, Apple is late to the party but it’s arriving with big ambitions.
According to Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, Apple is preparing to start development on iOS 27, and one of its primary focuses will be supporting the company’s first foldable iPhone. The new system will reportedly include unique features tailored to folding mechanics, such as interface adjustments and special fold-mode functions.
Rumors suggest that Apple’s foldable iPhone could launch in 2026. But don’t expect a revolutionary design. Early leaks indicate a strong resemblance to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7, including the same book-style form factor, inward fold, and hinge system. Apple, however, promises enhancements to the folding mechanism and hinge durability though the specifics remain vague.
Foldables are booming in China, breaking sales records, and Apple clearly doesn’t want to be left behind. It’s also a prime opportunity to tap deeper into the wallets of its loyal user base. Many Apple fans are eager to try a foldable “book-style” phone, but Android isn’t what they want to see each time they open their device.
So yes, Apple is bound to deliver a sleek and polished product but don’t expect it to be affordable.
The first foldable iPhone is likely to cost over $2,000 much like the iPhone X at launch or the recent Apple Vision Pro. It’ll be beautiful and cutting-edge, but definitely not for the budget-conscious.
