Huawei’s upcoming foldable device, the Mate X7, has reportedly appeared in the form of an engineering prototype, according to reliable tipster Digital Chat Station. Early details hint at significant hardware improvements and the continuation of Huawei’s push for ultra-slim form factors in its foldable series.
The Mate X7 is anticipated to feature a 7.95-inch internal display with 2K+ resolution. The screen will incorporate advanced COE LTPO panel technology along with Ultra Thin Glass (UTG), aimed at enhancing both durability and visual performance. This combination suggests a strong emphasis on delivering high-end display quality while maintaining a slim profile.
Under the hood, the foldable will be powered by a next-generation platform, pointing to a notable leap in processing power and efficiency compared to its predecessors.
Camera capabilities are also a major focus of the prototype. According to the source, Huawei is conducting A/B tests on the main rear camera, assessing two different 50MP sensors—one sized at 1/1.56 inches and another larger 1/1.3-inch option. The device is further expected to include a physical variable aperture system, a ~50MP periscope telephoto macro lens, and a multispectral sensor, all of which point to a highly adaptable and robust photography system.

Despite its sophisticated internals, the Mate X7 will continue Huawei’s tradition of prioritizing a slim, lightweight design while also offering a high degree of water resistance—an increasingly important feature in premium foldables.
Digital Chat Station also commented on the broader market trend, noting that Chinese foldable manufacturers will likely continue prioritizing thin and light form factors, alongside the use of customized wide aspect ratios to differentiate their designs.
That said, affordability remains an issue. Due to the intensive research, development, and after-sales support involved, foldable smartphones are not expected to become significantly cheaper in the near future. Among domestic brands, Huawei currently remains the only player reportedly generating profits from its foldable product line.
