Following the optical breakthrough in the Pura 80 Ultra, Huawei appears to be raising the bar once again. The company is now preparing even more advanced camera systems for its upcoming flagship lineup, particularly the anticipated Mate 80 series.
After the Pura 80 Ultra’s massive periscope module captured the attention of tech enthusiasts, fans have naturally shifted their focus to the Mate 80, especially the high-end RS and Pro+ models. And if the latest leak from reliable source @DigitalChatStation holds true, that excitement is well-founded.
A Mysterious New Telephoto System
According to the leak, both the Mate 80 RS and Pro+ will debut a brand-new telephoto system details remain under wraps, but the teaser alone has stirred plenty of buzz. This camera module is rumored to outperform even the Pura 80 Ultra’s exceptional zoom capabilities, suggesting Huawei isn’t done redefining mobile photography just yet.
Cutting-Edge Sensors from SmartSens: SC595XS and SC590XS
Beyond the telephoto lens, the leak also mentions Huawei’s use of the latest flagship sensors from SmartSens:
- The Mate 80 Pro+ is expected to feature the SC590XS sensor
- The Mate 80 RS Ultimate Design will likely be equipped with the SC595XS
Both sensors deliver 50 MP resolution and use a 1/1.28-inch format, but the SC595XS offers a more advanced package. It includes expanded dynamic range, SuperPixGain HDR, and is built on a 22-nanometer process. According to specs, it can capture up to 110 dB of dynamic range, meaning less overexposure and better detail in shadowed areas. Cameras using this sensor should excel in challenging lighting whether it’s backlight or near-darkness.
The SC590XS, while also built on TSMC’s 22nm process, features an RYYB color filter and focuses on balancing performance with power efficiency. These traits may make it a smart fit for the Pro+ variant.
Mate 80 Pro: Modest, Yet Still Upgraded
As for the Mate 80 Pro, rumors suggest it will adopt the SmartSens SC550 sensor (1/1.56″) along with a more conventional telephoto lens. However, it may still surprise users with a sophisticated macro mode, implemented through its telephoto optics.
The standard Mate 80 model, meanwhile, remains largely under wraps. Details about its camera modules and sensors are still unknown.
Final Thoughts
Huawei continues to push the envelope in mobile photography. If these leaks prove accurate, the Mate 80 RS and Pro+ may well set a new benchmark for smartphone imaging. Given the ambition shown with the Pura 80 Ultra, what’s coming next could be nothing short of groundbreaking.
