Google is rethinking how people consume written content. The company has added a new feature in Google Docs that allows users to listen to their documents instead of reading them. With the help of Gemini AI, text can now be read aloud directly in the browser at the press of a “Play” button.
A new option, Listen to this tab, is available under Tools > Audio for readers. Document authors can also insert a custom playback button within the text itself through Insert > Audio Buttons. This button appears inside the document and lets listeners activate narration without navigating menus. Users can personalize the button by changing its color, size, or label.
To enhance the listening experience, Google has introduced multiple voice options and adjustable playback speeds. The company says this approach not only improves accessibility but also offers fresh ways for people to interact with written material.
There are, however, some limitations. For now, the feature works only in English and only on the desktop version of Google Docs. It is available under the following subscription plans:
- Business Standard and Business Plus
- Enterprise Standard and Enterprise Plus
- Gemini Education and Education Premium
- Gemini Business and Enterprise
- Google AI Pro and Ultra
Users worldwide are eager for Google to extend support to more languages and mobile platforms. While there is no set timeline, the company’s track record suggests these updates are likely to arrive eventually.
