A recent Windows 11 security patch (KB5063878), released to address system vulnerabilities, has unexpectedly triggered hardware compatibility issues. Several popular SSD models are now facing critical malfunctions under certain conditions, effectively “disconnecting” from the operating system.
Reports indicate that after installing the update, the following SSD models may stop functioning properly:
- Fikwot FN955
- Corsair Force MP600
- KIOXIA EXCERIA PLUS G4
- SanDisk Extreme PRO M.2 NVMe 3D SSD
- All drives using the Phison PS5012-E12 controller
The failure typically occurs when writing more than 50 GB of data, such as during the installation of large games. Affected drives may refuse to read files, block S.M.A.R.T. diagnostics, or even risk data corruption. Industry reports also warn that SSDs without a DRAM buffer can experience errors at much smaller write volumes.
In some cases, restarting Windows temporarily restores access to the drive, but the issue reappears once large files are written again. Early analysis suggests the problem may stem from a memory leak in Windows 11 or a faulty driver interaction that disrupts SSD controller stability.
For now, the bug does not appear to be widespread, but multiple sources have confirmed its existence. Microsoft has not yet issued an official statement regarding the situation.
